About Society

The concept of Perioperative Medicine is gaining popularity in western world but awareness about it is still to hold its grip amongst anaesthesiologists in India. Anaesthesiologist now wish to change the image of “Doctor standing behind the curtain and mask” to be more recognised amongst patients.

This concept moves us out of the connes of operating rooms and broaden the domain on this very exciting medical eld to include preoperative assessment and optimisation of surgical patients with complex medical illnesses, with continued intraoperative and post-operative care. Out of our routine PAC, signicant number of patients require intense evaluation and optimisation for their medical illnesses (e.g. CAD, COPD, HT, DM, Valvular heart disease etc.) prior to surgery. We, “the Anaesthesiologists”, need to admit these patients, under our care in a dedicated Perioperative Medicine ward.

This practice has potential to change the face of speciality of Anaesthesiology, as patients would get comprehensive medical care at one place and will not be moving from pillar to post of various medical departments for preoperative optimisation, as well as Anaesthesiologist's contribution in improved patient outcome will be more evident to patients and other specialties of medical fraternity.

Similarly, by virtue of our training and skills, we “the Anaesthesiologists” are most suitable Intensive Care Physicians and we employ our knowledge and skills of Intensive Care in not only treatment of postoperative surgical patients but also critically ill medical patients. The very purpose of forming the Indian society of “Intensive Care and Perioperative Medicine” is to emphasize the role of Anaesthesiologists in these fields. Together we need to establish our roles, before other specialties take over.
